WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF SLOW COOKING
Slow cooking (i.e. cooking at a controlled low temperature over a long period):
-
minimises nutrient loss;
-
ensures that nutrients are kept at their best;
-
is gentle on digestion;
-
aids nutrient absorption;
-
increases digestibility; and
-
enhances the flavour and palatability of the food.
CAN I FEED MY DOG A WET FOOD DIET ONLY OR DO I NEED TO ADD DRY FOOD?
You can dispel with the myth that dogs must have kibble in their diet to clean their teeth. What dogs need is a complete and balanced diet. All of our slow cooked meals and B.A.R.F meatballs are complete and balanced, so you don’t have to worry about feeding anything else.
If you are worried about oral health, a better alternative to kibble is to supplement your dog’s diet with long lasting healthy treats, as the act of gnawing on these can prevent the build-up of plaque and tartar and prevent cavity formation.
WHAT DOES COMPLETE & BALANCED MEAN?
All our meals and meatballs are ‘complete and balanced’. This means they:
-
fulfil all the nutritional requirements your dog needs, including macronutrients (proteins, fats and carbohydrates), and micronutrients (vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids);
-
meet the nutrient profiles established by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), which is the global set of guidelines that all pet foods follow; and
-
balance the nutrients included to ensure that they are absorbed properly by the body and appropriately used for each bodily system.
Our meals and meatballs are also nutritionally validated and approved by pet nutritionists.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HUMAN GRADE PET FOOD AND OTHER PET FOOD?
Our meals and meatballs are formulated using 100% human grade ingredients, including ethically sourced human grade free range meat.
In Australia, there is a big difference between ‘human grade’ and ‘pet’ meat. Human grade is strictly regulated by the Australian government. In the case of meat, this requires:
-
certification;
-
stringent processes, systems, licensing, standards and testing for the safe and hygienic production and processing of meat;
-
inspections to ensure minimum standards are met or exceeded; and
-
that all ingredients are edible and fit for human consumption.
Pet grade, on the other hand, recognises that some meat that is not suitable for human consumption is still safe and appropriate for pet consumption. This might include scraps from an abattoir floor and meat from dead, diseased, dying, or disabled animals.
Wholesome Hound meals and meatballs are formulated exclusively using ingredients that are human grade and suitable for human consumption. The only difference between our products and human products are the specialised ingredients we add for your dogs, such as vitamins and minerals to meet their specific needs.
Our meals and meatballs are also produced in a facility that is independently audited to meet the highest quality and food safety standards for human food. The facility is HACCP, BRC and Export accredited.
WHERE DO YOU SOURCE YOUR INGREDIENTS FROM?
We are an Australian owned family business and are proud to support other Australian businesses. 100% of our meat is ethically sourced from free range chicken farms in country Australia, while our vegetables, vegetables and dry ingredients are also sourced locally where possible.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A NO NASTY DIET?
A no nasty diet is generally a healthier more nutritious and digestible option for dogs.
All Wholesome Hound products have no nasties, meaning they:
-
do not contain things like preservatives, artificial colours or flavours, chemicals, antibiotics, or the like (i.e. nasty ingredients); and
-
are made with whole foods that are full of naturally occurring goodness.
Many commercial dog foods, on the other hand, can be full of nasty ingredients, as well as high amounts of starchy carbohydrates, sugar, multiple meat byproducts or derivatives. As dogs are not biologically designed to digest these ingredients, these foods can often cause stomach upset.

Because it is designed to feed your dog the diet it evolved to eat, it is often instinctively preferred by dogs.
WHAT DOES B.A.R.F MEAN?
The Biologically Appropriate Raw Food (BARF) Diet is an evolutionary diet based on what canines ate before they became domesticated. It looks at the way canines used to eat in the wild and provides a modern version of this diet, targeting ingredients that have been instinctively preferred by dogs for thousands of years.
The BARF diet is therefore balanced to meet your dog’s natural nutritional needs in a different way than other pet foods. It contains an optimal balance of energy derived from proteins, fats and carbohydrates, which is instinctively preferred by dogs. Generally, this diet is comprised of:
DO I NEED TO TRANSITION MY DOG ONTO A RAW DIET?
Even though raw meat is a dog’s natural diet, switching your dog’s food abruptly (even to a quality diet) can cause gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting, diarrhea and a decreased appetite.
To make the transition as comfortable as possible for your dog, we recommend gradually changing your dog’s diet to give their digestive system time to adjust. For most dogs, this transition will look like:
-
Day 1-2: 25% new diet and 75% old diet
-
Day 3-4: 50% new diet and 50% old diet
-
Day 5-6: 75% new diet and 25% old diet
-
Day 7: 100% new diet
However, as every dog is different, it’s important to monitor your pet’s individual response and adjust the transition accordingly.
If your dog’s stool is normal, then slowly increase the amount of the new diet given daily.
If your dog has a sensitive stomach, food allergies, or other gastrointestinal issue, they may need an even longer transition period.
If at any point during the transition your dog display changes in appetite, vomiting, or diarrhea, we recommend slowing the transition down. If you have already transitioned gradually and your dog is still experiencing gastrointestinal upset, we recommend consulting your veterinarian. In some cases, it may be necessary to choose a different diet.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A RAW DIET?
A raw food diet, properly formulated, is a nutritious and protein rich diet that can provide numerous benefits for your dog’s health and wellbeing. This is because raw diets:
-
are naturally digestible;
-
help maintain a lean body mass index (LBMI) and aid weight management as wet diets are less energy dense and more fulfilling. Feeding to a LBMI may also increase a pet’s life expectancy;
-
deliver optimal water turnover and enhance hydration due to the high moisture content; and
-
provide sustained energy instead of the spikes found in highly processed pet foods. This may contribute to more stable and calm moods and energy levels.
A side perk is that raw diets are also a natural and sustainable choice.
IS A RAW DIEST SAFE?
Dogs are biologically designed to consume raw meat and have been doing so as an essential part of their diets for thousands of years. Unlike humans, their antibacterial saliva and powerful digestive tracts are designed to ingest food and kill any bacteria quickly.
As with any food, the safety of raw food is largely dependent on the facility it is made in and the quality of the ingredients. All Wholesome Hound meals and meatballs are made:
-
using human grade ingredients, including ethically sourced free range meat; and
-
in a HACCP, BRC and Export accredited facility that is independently audited to meet the highest quality and food safety standards for human food.
Human grade food is strictly regulated by the Australian government and means that all of these products have:
-
been subject to stringent processes, systems, licensing, standards and testing for the safe and hygienic production and processing of meat; and
-
undergone inspections to ensure that minimum standards for human grade food have been met or exceeded.
